The Unfolded

Some chairs were never meant to be set up.

This fall. In a convention hall near you. After hours.

Rated S for Spooky (mildly). Contains mild creaking, one closet, and extensive folding. No jump scares unless you ask for them.

Off: no jump scares, no sudden loud sounds. On: one (1) jump scare in the closet, a louder thunderclap and a lightning flash or two. Never more than two flashes at a time, and never fast.

Hall B · after hours

The hall

The con ended hours ago. The chairs were folded and stacked against the wall. They were. We all saw them. Look away for a moment and see what happens.

Chairs set up: 0 of 6. All folded. For now.

They also move when you scroll away or switch tabs. Six chairs, and that’s all of them. They are not going anywhere. That is rather the point.

Whatever you do

Don’t open the storage closet

You can, though. It’s your evening.

Found footage

The night-shift log

Recovered from a clipboard by the stage. The volunteer’s badge was upside down, so we’re calling them “the volunteer.”

  1. Last attendee gone. Chairs folded and stacked against the east wall. All of them. I counted twice.
  2. Heard a creak. Old buildings creak. That is a well-known fact about buildings.
  3. One chair is unfolded. I did not unfold a chair. Folded it back. It seemed… disappointed?
  4. Three chairs unfolded. In a row. Facing the stage. Neat spacing. Honestly better than mine.
  5. The storage closet is open a crack. There is a sign on it that says DON’T. It is in my handwriting. I do not remember writing it.
  6. Every chair is set up. Aisles clear. Accessible seating up front, properly marked. Someone left a note on the stage: “for tomorrow.”
  7. I think they just wanted to help.
  8. I am going to sit down. It would be rude not to.
  9. [TAPE ENDS. Faint sound of someone sitting down, very comfortably.]

The twist

The chairs just wanted to be set up for the con.

That’s it. That’s the whole horror. A room full of chairs, waiting for somebody to show up early and make the place ready for everyone. Somebody like The Crew. Somebody like you.

Join the setup crew (it’s not haunted)

That’s our real volunteer application. Setup happens with the lights on.
